In 1911, Beatrice Farnham, a popular Eastern artist, traveled by railroad to Western Colorado to paint and draw canyon landscapes. She developed a partnership with John Otto, a quirky trail builder and guide, who was responsible for the promotion and establishment of Colorado National Monument. The couple was soon married in an unusual outdoor wedding that created headlines in newspapers nationwide.
By summer’s end, Beatrice Farnham left Colorado. Although much had been written about John Otto, little was known about the woman to whom he was briefly married. The independent spirit that led Beatrice Farnham to Western Colorado took her away on a different path.
Among Canyon Shadows is the true story of Beatrice Farnham’s life, where she came from, and what became of her in later life. Historical newspaper interviews give Beatrice Farnham voice and character. Colorado National Monument park rangers provided assistance and enthusiasm. The author explored hiking trails and attempted to draw landscapes where Beatrice Farnham spent the summer of 1911. The book contains historic news images as well as scenic photographs by the author.
